Artist Spotlight: Diaspora Drumming (Touring from Western New York Young Audiences Affiliate)

Diaspora Drumming is a group dedicated to the music of Africa and the African Diaspora. Members of this group have studied percussion in Cuba, Brazil, West Africa and Mexico. In addition to the pure enjoyment they experience while performing, members of Diaspora Drumming are intrigued by the many ways that drums and rhythms in Latin America are related to those in Western Africa. Everywhere in Latin America that Africans were brought as slaves, they brought their songs, rhythms, dances and culture. Africans kept the most essential parts of their culture, even as they met new people and encountered different natural resources and situations. Gradually, each Latin American culture took on its own distinctive musical styles as well as maintaining some original African influence. Ensemble members include Ringo Brill, Gabriel Gutierrez and Tiffany Nicely.
