Artist Spotlight: Ward Hartenstein

Ward Hartenstein is a graduate of RITís School for American Crafts, where he developed his interest in designing and building musical instruments. He has since become a composer and performer of original music using his unusual homemade instruments: clay marimba, tongue drum, bell tree, circular flute, and others. Ward has been a frequent collaborator with the Eastman Percussion Ensemble, Present Tense Dance, and the Elizabeth Clark Dance Ensemble. As an educator, he shares his curiosity and creativity with his students by exploring sounds of all kinds and by finding ways to express ideas and emotions with simple musical devices. He believes strongly in engaging students in the creative process and in finding delight in the sounds of the world around us. Ward is also a founding member of Flower City Vaudeville, where he contributes music, juggling, storytelling, and comedy performance.
